In the 1860s, the first Chinese people moved to the downtown area. [19] In the 1870s, the Chinese were the primary fishermen in the area. [20] Beginning in the 1880s, a large number of Chinese began to move to San Diego, establishing a concentration; with up to 200 Chinese making up a minority of the 8,600 who lived in all of San Diego.
