Learn about the history and operations of Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries and the sole designer and builder of aircraft carriers for the US Navy. The shipyard, founded in 1886, has built more than 800 ships and is a major employer in Virginia and North Carolina.

When it spun off as a new company on 31 March 2011, Huntington Ingalls Industries comprised Northrop Grumman’s shipbuilding businesses in Newport News, Virginia, Pascagoula, Mississippi, and Avondale, Louisiana; Avondale was closed in 2014.
In 1794, United States Congress passed "An Act to Provide a Naval Armament," allowing the Federal Government to lease the Gosport Shipyard from Virginia. In 1799 the keel of USS Chesapeake, one of the first six frigates authorized by Congress, was laid, making her the first ship built in Gosport for the U.S. Navy.
The tankers were built in 1979 at Newport News Shipbuilding's shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. Each vessel cost approximately 136.4 million USD. [3] In June 2004, the Marine Atlantic—ex U.S.T. Atlantic—was sold to Indian breakers. After clearing Indian customs, she was intentionally beached in India for ship breaking. [4]

A former division of Bethlehem Steel Corporation that built ships in the United States from 1905 to 1997. It had shipyards in several states and produced various types of vessels, including destroyers, aircraft carriers, and offshore drilling rigs.
USS Salem is a heavy cruiser built at the Fore River Shipyard in 1945 and returned to Quincy in 1994 as a museum ship. The museum features exhibits on naval history, shipbuilding, Navy SEALs and the city of Salem.
