U-Haul Holding Company is an American moving truck, trailer, and self-storage rental company, based in Phoenix, Arizona, [1] that has been in operation since 1945. The company was founded by Leonard Shoen and Anna Mary Carty in Ridgefield, Washington, who began it in a garage owned by Carty's family, and expanded it through franchising with gas stations.
The company operates its namesake Hertz brand, along with the brands Dollar Rent A Car, Firefly Car Rental and Thrifty Car Rental. It is one of the three big rental car holding companies in the United States, holding a 36% market share, placing it ahead of Avis Budget Group and second to Enterprise Holdings. [2]
The company was founded in 1963 by Kenneth and Helen Walker as "$3.99 Car Rentals" and quickly expanded by purchasing several different car rental companies. In 1984, the various car rental brands were consolidated under the name Advantage Rent a Car. The Walker family sold the company in 2006, and by 2008, it was bankrupt.
While there, she was considered instrumental [citation needed] in establishing the National Preferred Provider Rental Agreements between Enterprise Rent A Car and many of the auto manufacturers. In 1997, she moved back into a rental as the General Manager of the New York group.
In 2007, Enterprise agreed to purchase a controlling share in the company from Cerberus Capital Management. [2] A sale to rival Enterprise Rent-A-Car was completed on August 1, 2007, making the combined Enterprise-Alamo-National the largest US car rental operation, ahead of The Hertz Corporation and Avis Budget Group.
Citer has owned the Spanish car rental company Atesa since 1989 and was also sold to Enterprise. Since 1998 Citer was a National franchise holder and has 250 sites in France and a further 110 in Spain. In 2011 Citer and Atesa has a fleet of 30,000 vehicles.
